In the village, a ruling caste controls local political and religious institutions. For children who do not belong to the ruling caste, migration is a social mobility factor that is enhanced by formal schooling. Since formally educated children tend not to return, the ruling caste seeks to develop family loyalty by choosing religious education instead. The theory hence predicts that the social status of the family has a significant impact on educational choice. Children from the ruling caste who are sent abroad have a lower probability of being sent to formal school. They are more likely to be sent to Koranic schools that emphasize religious and family values. The theoretical predictions are tested on data from Matam region in Senegal, a region where roughly one of every two children have ever attended school. date: 2011-03-28 date_type: published publisher: TSE Working Paper official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/24586 faculty: tse divisions: tse keywords: Schooling keywords: Migration keywords: Social Status keywords: Haalpulaar language: en has_fulltext: TRUE subjectsJEL: JEL_I21 subjectsJEL: JEL_O12 subjectsJEL: JEL_O15 subjectsJEL: JEL_O17 subjectsJEL: JEL_Z13 view_date_year: 2011 full_text_status: public monograph_type: working_paper series: TSE Working Paper volume: 11-236 place_of_pub: Toulouse pages: 47 institution: Université Toulouse 1 Capitole department: Toulouse School of Economics book_title: TSE Working Paper oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:24586 harvester_local_overwrite: oai_set harvester_local_overwrite: faculty harvester_local_overwrite: site harvester_local_overwrite: department harvester_local_overwrite: pages harvester_local_overwrite: place_of_pub harvester_local_overwrite: institution harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn oai_lastmod: 2019-10-02T07:49:54Z oai_set: tse oai_set: ut1c site: ut1 citation: Auriol, Emmanuelle and Demonsant, Jean-Luc (2011) Education and Migration Choices in Hierarchical Societies: The Case of Matam, Senegal.
