We address this important question by studying whether anti-LGBTQ mobilization pays off electorally for the initiating party. Empirically, we study the adoption of anti-LGBTQ resolu-tions in many Polish municipalities prior to the 2019 parliamentary election. Using a synthetic difference-in-differences design, we find that these resolu-tions significantly depressed turnout in affected municipalities, with oppo-sition parties showing less mobilization capacity. By contrast, turnout for the incumbent Law and Justice Party increased substantially. Overall, this study’s findings are relevant for understanding the electoral consequences of both elite-led mobilization against stigmatized and discriminated groups, and policies of subnational democratic backsliding. date: 2025-03 date_type: published publisher: TSE Working Paper official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/130436 faculty: tse divisions: tse keywords: LGBTQ rights keywords: sexuality and politics keywords: political homophobia keywords: political competition keywords: political participation language: en has_fulltext: TRUE view_date_year: 2025 full_text_status: public monograph_type: working_paper series: TSE Working Paper volume: 25-1628 place_of_pub: Toulouse pages: 47 institution: Université Toulouse 1 Capitole department: Toulouse School of Economics book_title: TSE Working Paper oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:130436 harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: note harvester_local_overwrite: department harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn harvester_local_overwrite: creators_halaffid harvester_local_overwrite: institution harvester_local_overwrite: place_of_pub harvester_local_overwrite: pages harvester_local_overwrite: creators_name harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd oai_lastmod: 2025-03-21T07:55:22Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 hal_id: hal-04993657 hal_passwd: i50s5& hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.science/hal-04993657 citation: Haas, Violeta , Bogatyrev, Konstantin, Abou-Chadi, Tarik, Klüver, Heike and Stoetzer, Lukas F.
