Using a standard Hotelling model, I show that online competition unambiguously reduces news articles’ quality, as compared to the scenario in which outlets compete to sell their newspapers (content bundles) to single-homing consumers. The unbundling of journalism also dampens outlets’ newsgathering activities when their ideological positions are relatively unimportant from consumers’ viewpoint. In this case, consumers are worse off in the online market for news, even though they consume more articles and have low disutility from switching. date: 2023-09 date_type: published publisher: Elsevier id_number: 10.1016/j.euroecorev.2023.104532 official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/130278 faculty: tse divisions: tse keywords: Online news keywords: Unbundling keywords: News quality keywords: Newsgathering language: en has_fulltext: FALSE doi: 10.1016/j.euroecorev.2023.104532 subjectsJEL: JEL_D43 subjectsJEL: JEL_L82 subjectsJEL: JEL_L86 view_date_year: 2023 full_text_status: none publication: European Economic Review volume: Vol. 158 number: 104532 place_of_pub: Amsterdam refereed: TRUE issn: 0014-2921 oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:130278 harvester_local_overwrite: volume harvester_local_overwrite: date harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn harvester_local_overwrite: creators_halaffid harvester_local_overwrite: id_number harvester_local_overwrite: publisher harvester_local_overwrite: place_of_pub harvester_local_overwrite: creators_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd oai_lastmod: 2025-02-04T14:16:30Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 hal_id: hal-04941017 hal_passwd: &owa1ew7 hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.science/hal-04941017 citation: Bisceglia, Michele (2023) The unbundling of journalism.
