This is recognized to stimulate growth, alleviate poverty, and address gender disparities in the financial sector. This paper closely examines four prominent payment solutions in the developing world, namely M-Pesa in Kenya, UPI in India, Pix in Brazil, and Yape in Peru. These payment systems differ enough in their key characteristics to draw useful lessons from their successful implementation. We employ a descriptive approach based on a three-dimensional conceptual framework that emphasizes the role played by payment service providers, the role played by regulators and central banks, and the degree of payment system interoperability. We then attempt to make this framework operational by suggesting a way to quantitatively represent the four payment systems examined. While these varied experiences demonstrate that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, they highlight the necessity of active public-private sector cooperation and placing the end user at the center of such initiatives. date: 2024-12 date_type: published publisher: Elsevier id_number: 10.1016/j.infoecopol.2024.101113 official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/130252 faculty: tse divisions: tse language: en has_fulltext: FALSE doi: 10.1016/j.infoecopol.2024.101113 view_date_year: 2024 full_text_status: none publication: Information Economics and Policy volume: vol.69 place_of_pub: Amsterdam refereed: TRUE issn: 0167-6245 oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:130252 harvester_local_overwrite: number harvester_local_overwrite: volume harvester_local_overwrite: issn harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn harvester_local_overwrite: creators_halaffid harvester_local_overwrite: publisher harvester_local_overwrite: place_of_pub harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd oai_lastmod: 2025-01-31T10:58:03Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 hal_id: hal-04926380 hal_passwd: x@l2j0b hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.science/hal-04926380 citation: Gasmi, Farid and Aurazo, Jose (2024) Digital payment systems in emerging economies: Lessons from Kenya, India, Brazil, and Peru.
