In a stable autocracy, the decision to implement decentralization reforms hinges on a tradeoff: while centralization enables the autocrat to extract higher rents, it also results in reduced productivity in the poor region. The autocrat opts for decentralization when the negative impact on productivity outweighs the benefits of rent extraction. Moreover, under the pressure of democratic movements and growing instability, an authoritarian regime may also pursue decentralization reforms to preserve its wealth from the decisions of the poor median voter. date: 2025-02 date_type: published publisher: Elsevier id_number: 10.1016/j.euroecorev.2024.104930 official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/130115 faculty: tse divisions: tse keywords: Autocracy keywords: Decentralization keywords: Democartization language: en has_fulltext: FALSE doi: 10.1016/j.euroecorev.2024.104930 subjectsJEL: JEL_D02 subjectsJEL: JEL_D72 subjectsJEL: JEL_D74 subjectsJEL: JEL_O57 subjectsJEL: JEL_P48 view_date_year: 2025 full_text_status: none publication: European Economic Review volume: vol. 172 place_of_pub: Amsterdam refereed: TRUE issn: 0014-2921 oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:130115 harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn harvester_local_overwrite: creators_halaffid harvester_local_overwrite: publisher harvester_local_overwrite: place_of_pub harvester_local_overwrite: id_number harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd harvester_local_overwrite: number harvester_local_overwrite: volume harvester_local_overwrite: creators_id oai_lastmod: 2025-02-05T07:56:20Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 hal_id: hal-04923623 hal_passwd: 4&#j17 hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.science/hal-04923623 citation: Auriol, EmmanuelleIdRef and Dahmani-Scuitti, Anaïs (2025) Decentralization in Autocraties.
