Measuring differences in preference intensity ispublished: pub subjects: subjects_ECO abstract: How well do existing survey instruments differentiate between opinions that affect individual behavior and opinions that don't? To answer this question, we randomly assigned U.S. respondents to one of three survey instruments: Likert items (Likert), Likert items followed by personal importance items (Likert+) and Quadratic Voting for Survey Research (QVSR), which gives respondents a fixed budget to buy “favor” or “oppose” votes, with the price for each vote increasing quadratically. We find that, relative to Likert, both Likert+ and QVSR better identify people who care enough about an issue to act in opinion-congruent ways, with QVSR offering the most consistent improvement overall. Building on these results, we show how conclusions regarding the relationship between policy opinions and self-interest can differ across measurement strategies. date: 2024-10-08 date_type: published publisher: Cambridge University Press id_number: 10.1017/psrm.2024.27 official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/129303 faculty: tse divisions: tse language: en has_fulltext: TRUE doi: 10.1017/psrm.2024.27 view_date_year: 2024 full_text_status: public publication: Political Science Research and Methods place_of_pub: Cambridge refereed: TRUE issn: 2049-8470 oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:129303 harvester_local_overwrite: creators_name harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn harvester_local_overwrite: creators_halaffid harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: ispublished harvester_local_overwrite: date harvester_local_overwrite: publisher harvester_local_overwrite: place_of_pub harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd harvester_local_overwrite: abstract harvester_local_overwrite: title oai_lastmod: 2025-03-05T08:27:38Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 hal_id: hal-04841086 hal_passwd: o1&5ff0 hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.science/hal-04841086 citation: Cavaillé, Charlotte , Chen, Daniel L. and Van der Straeten, Karine (2024) Who cares?
