We find that individuals generally lack proficiency in identifying fake news and overestimate their ability to distinguish between accurate and false content. Providing information-through-experience about personal susceptibility to fake news leads to belief updating and greater awareness of detection ability. Crucially, this increased awareness significantly raises individuals’ willingness to pay for measures that protect against the harms of misinformation. date: 2024-10 date_type: published publisher: TSE Working Paper official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/129250 faculty: tse divisions: tse keywords: Fake news keywords: misinformation keywords: personal susceptibility keywords: experience keywords: belief updating keywords: willingness to pay keywords: demand-side policy intervention keywords: RCT experiments language: en has_fulltext: TRUE subjectsJEL: JEL_C83 subjectsJEL: JEL_D83 subjectsJEL: JEL_D84 subjectsJEL: JEL_D91 view_date_year: 2024 full_text_status: public monograph_type: working_paper series: TSE Working Paper volume: 24-1519 place_of_pub: Toulouse, France pages: 37 institution: Université Toulouse 1 Capitole department: Toulouse School of Economics book_title: TSE Working Paper oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:129250 harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn harvester_local_overwrite: creators_halaffid harvester_local_overwrite: pages harvester_local_overwrite: place_of_pub harvester_local_overwrite: department harvester_local_overwrite: institution harvester_local_overwrite: date harvester_local_overwrite: title harvester_local_overwrite: creators_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd oai_lastmod: 2025-02-07T08:50:04Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 hal_id: hal-04963065 hal_passwd: b8o&5vkm hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.science/hal-04963065 citation: Assenza, TizianaIdRef , Cardaci, Alberto and Huber, Stefanie (2024) Fake news: susceptibility, awareness and solutions.
