We elicit votes on a ballot initiative on animal welfare in Switzerland that spurred campaigns involving widely shared normative values. We send a message to voters about scientific evidence supporting the claim that “good-hearted people tend to be good to animals.” We interpret this message as a factor that may alter the self-signaling value linked to voting in favor of the initiative. We investigate how this message affects selection and processing of information, as well as reported voting behavior. We find that the message is effective in several ways: voters agree more with arguments in favor of the initiative, are more likely to anticipate voting in favor, and do report having voted in favor of the initiative more often. date: 2024-03 date_type: published publisher: Elsevier id_number: 10.1016/j.jpubeco.2024.105070 official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/129049 faculty: tse divisions: tse language: en has_fulltext: FALSE doi: 10.1016/j.jpubeco.2024.105070 view_date_year: 2024 full_text_status: none publication: Journal of Public Economics volume: vol. 231 number: n° 105070 place_of_pub: Amsterdam refereed: TRUE issn: 0047-2727 oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:129049 harvester_local_overwrite: number harvester_local_overwrite: volume harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: publisher harvester_local_overwrite: place_of_pub harvester_local_overwrite: note harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn harvester_local_overwrite: creators_name harvester_local_overwrite: creators_halaffid harvester_local_overwrite: creators_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd oai_lastmod: 2024-02-01T14:07:43Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 hal_id: hal-04472205 hal_passwd: o?r3p#g hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.science/hal-04472205 citation: Mechtenberg, Lydia , Perino, Grischa, Treich, Nicolas , Tyran, Jean-Robert and Wang, Stéphanie W.
