We report on an ecologically-valid analysis of speech experienced over the course of a day by young children (N = 24, 6–58 months old, 33% female) in a forager-horticulturalist population of lowland Bolivia. A permissive definition of input (i.e., including overlapping, background, and non-linguistic vocalizations) leads to massive changes in terms of input quantity, including a quadrupling of the estimate for overall input compared to a restrictive definition (only near and clear speech), while who talked to and around a focal child is relatively stable across input definitions. We discuss implications of these results for theoretical and empirical research into language acquisition. date: 2023-11-28 date_type: published publisher: John Wiley & Sons id_number: 10.1111/infa.12568 official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/128749 faculty: tse divisions: tse language: en has_fulltext: FALSE doi: 10.1111/infa.12568 view_date_year: 2023 full_text_status: none publication: Infancy volume: vol. 29 number: n° 2 place_of_pub: Hoboken pagerange: 196-215 refereed: TRUE issn: 1525-0008 oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:128749 harvester_local_overwrite: issn harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: note harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn harvester_local_overwrite: creators_halaffid harvester_local_overwrite: creators_id harvester_local_overwrite: ispublished harvester_local_overwrite: date harvester_local_overwrite: publisher harvester_local_overwrite: place_of_pub harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd harvester_local_overwrite: number harvester_local_overwrite: volume oai_lastmod: 2024-02-15T13:23:47Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 hal_id: hal-04390341 hal_passwd: r116t0b hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.science/hal-04390341 citation: Scaff, Camila , Casillas, Marisa , Stieglitz, Jonathan and Cristia, Alejandrina (2023) Characterization of children's verbal input in a forager-farmer population using long-form audio recordings and diverse input definitions.
