It lays out the main elements of economic theory relevant to analyzing the trade-off between PPPs and the public provision of complex projects. It places PPPs within a historical perspective. It reviews empirical evaluations of the effectiveness of PPPs and, whenever possible, the implications for social outcomes. Finally, it draws conclusions on cross-cutting issues that influence the efficiency of PPPs, from contract design and regulation to renegotiations and institutional issues. The paper straightens out and qualifies the record of existing evidence and signals some of the main areas and topics for future fruitful research. date: 2023-06 date_type: published publisher: American Economic Association id_number: 10.1257/jel.20211607 official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/126363 faculty: tse divisions: tse language: en has_fulltext: FALSE doi: 10.1257/jel.20211607 view_date_year: 2023 full_text_status: none publication: Journal of Economic Literature volume: vol. 61 number: n° 2 place_of_pub: Nashville, TN pagerange: 655-715 refereed: TRUE issn: 0022-0515 oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:126363 harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: title harvester_local_overwrite: note harvester_local_overwrite: number harvester_local_overwrite: volume harvester_local_overwrite: issn harvester_local_overwrite: creators_halaffid harvester_local_overwrite: publisher harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd harvester_local_overwrite: publish_to_hal harvester_local_overwrite: place_of_pub harvester_local_overwrite: creators_affiliation harvester_local_overwrite: creators_id oai_lastmod: 2024-02-15T09:12:29Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 publish_to_hal: TRUE hal_id: hal-04154928 hal_passwd: v#z#m4 hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.science/hal-04154928 citation: Fabre, Anaïs and Straub, Stéphane (2023) The impact of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in infrastructure, health and education.
