It addresses the problem of endogeneity in infrastructure location by using an original empirical strategy, based on the "historical natural experiment" constituted by the creation of the new federal capital city Brasília in 1960. The results reveal a dual pattern, with improved transport connections increasing concentration of economic activity and population around the main centers in the South of the country, while spurring the emergence of secondary economic centers in the less developed North, in line with predictions in terms of agglomeration economies. Over the period, roads are shown to account for half of pcGDP growth and to spur a significant decrease in spatial inequality. date: 2020-03 date_type: published publisher: Elsevier id_number: 10.1016/j.worlddev.2019.104739 official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/123698 faculty: tse divisions: tse language: en has_fulltext: TRUE doi: 10.1016/j.worlddev.2019.104739 view_date_year: 2020 full_text_status: public publication: World Development volume: vol. 127 refereed: TRUE issn: 0305-750X oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:123698 harvester_local_overwrite: publish_to_hal harvester_local_overwrite: faculty harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: creators_affiliation harvester_local_overwrite: publisher harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd harvester_local_overwrite: creators_halaffid harvester_local_overwrite: volume harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn harvester_local_overwrite: title oai_lastmod: 2024-04-17T14:00:46Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 publish_to_hal: TRUE hal_id: hal-02929470 hal_passwd: f640?&3p hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-02929470 citation: Straub, Stéphane and Bird, Julia (2020) The Brasilia experiment: the heterogeneous impact of road access on spatial development in Brazil.
