These three logics – directing, constraining and framing online behaviours – are similar to Foucault’s approach to power, which is understood as a means to “lead other people’s behaviours”, as it is in this case enacted through the mediation of technical resources, such as software, algorithms and operating systems. This paper provides three illustrations of these logics of governmentality: the way in which Google tries to direct webmasters’ practices with the help of its SEO guidelines and a webmaster ranking system (governmentality by incentives); the way by which developers constrain online behaviours through websites and software (governmentality by design); the way Apple frames the work of app developers in order to institute specific standards for action and interaction within its iPhone operating system (governmentality by framing). date: 2016-09-30 date_type: published publisher: Alexander Von Humboldt - Institute for Internet and Society id_number: 10.14763/2016.3.433 faculty: other divisions: other keywords: Governmentality keywords: Framing keywords: User behaviour french_keywords: Gouvernementalité french_keywords: Internet language: en has_fulltext: TRUE view_date_year: 2016 full_text_status: public publication: Internet Policy Review volume: 5 number: 3 refereed: TRUE issn: 2197-6775 harvester_local_overwrite: eprintid harvester_local_overwrite: userid harvester_local_overwrite: faculty harvester_local_overwrite: dir harvester_local_overwrite: site harvester_local_overwrite: type harvester_local_overwrite: number harvester_local_overwrite: date harvester_local_overwrite: keywords harvester_local_overwrite: date_type harvester_local_overwrite: creators_name harvester_local_overwrite: french_keywords harvester_local_overwrite: refereed harvester_local_overwrite: divisions harvester_local_overwrite: abstract harvester_local_overwrite: title harvester_local_overwrite: publication harvester_local_overwrite: creators_id harvester_local_overwrite: volume harvester_local_overwrite: ispublished harvester_local_overwrite: publisher harvester_local_overwrite: id_number harvester_local_overwrite: subjects harvester_local_overwrite: language harvester_local_overwrite: publish_to_hal harvester_local_overwrite: issn harvester_local_overwrite: pending harvester_local_overwrite: creators_affiliation harvester_local_overwrite: hal_id harvester_local_overwrite: hal_version harvester_local_overwrite: hal_url harvester_local_overwrite: hal_passwd harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn site: ut1 publish_to_hal: FALSE hal_id: hal-02432780 hal_passwd: ch92i6 hal_version: 1 hal_url: https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-02432780 citation: Badouard, Romain , Mabi, Clément and Sire, Guillaume (2016) Beyond “Points of Control”: logics of digital governmentality.
