Nevertheless, this relationship has been rarely studied in a strategic game. In this paper, we study wealth effects in a strategic contest game. Two opposing effects arise: wealth reduces the marginal cost of effort but it also reduces the marginal benefit of winning the contest. We consider three types of contests which vary depending on whether rents and efforts are commensurable with wealth. Our theoretical analysis shows that the effects of wealth are strongly "contestdependent". It thus does not support general claims that the rich lobby more or that low economic growth and wealth inequality spur conflicts. date: 2016-09 date_type: published publisher: TSE Working Paper official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/30893 faculty: tse divisions: tse keywords: Conflict keywords: contest keywords: rent-seeking keywords: wealth keywords: risk aversion keywords: lobbying keywords: power keywords: redistribution language: en has_fulltext: TRUE subjectsJEL: JEL_C72 subjectsJEL: JEL_D72 view_date_year: 2016 full_text_status: public monograph_type: working_paper series: TSE Working Paper volume: 16-699 pages: 48 institution: Université Toulouse Capitole department: Toulouse School of Economics book_title: TSE Working Paper oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:30893 harvester_local_overwrite: department harvester_local_overwrite: faculty harvester_local_overwrite: pages harvester_local_overwrite: institution harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn oai_lastmod: 2016-09-21T12:30:18Z oai_set: tse site: ut1 citation: Schroyen, Fred and Treich, Nicolas (2016) The Power of Money: Wealth Effects in Contest.
