This paper studies how the joint interaction of the family, the market and the State influences capital accumulation in a society in which the assistance the children give to dependent parents is triggered by a family norm. We find that, with a family norm in place, the dynamics of capital accumulation differ from the ones of a standard Diamond (1965) model with dependence. For instance, if the family help is sizeably more productive than the other LTC financing sources, a pay-as-you-go social insurance might be a complement to private insurance and foster capital accumulation. date: 2016-04 date_type: published publisher: Springer Verlag id_number: 10.1007/s00199-016-0957-4 official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/30364 faculty: tse divisions: tse language: en has_fulltext: FALSE doi: 10.1007/s00199-016-0957-4 subjectsJEL: JEL_D13 subjectsJEL: JEL_E22 subjectsJEL: JEL_H55 view_date_year: 2016 full_text_status: none publication: Economic Theory volume: 61 number: 4 pagerange: 755-785 refereed: TRUE issn: 0938-2259 oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:30364 harvester_local_overwrite: oai_set harvester_local_overwrite: number harvester_local_overwrite: issn harvester_local_overwrite: faculty harvester_local_overwrite: sub_title harvester_local_overwrite: site harvester_local_overwrite: title harvester_local_overwrite: publisher harvester_local_overwrite: id_number harvester_local_overwrite: subjectsJEL harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn oai_lastmod: 2019-01-24T11:55:49Z oai_set: tse oai_set: ut1c site: ut1 citation: Canta, Chiara, Pestieau, Pierre and Thibault, Emmanuel (2016) Long term care and capital accumulation: the impact of the State, the market and the family.
