This paper identifies the economic effects of such non-violent political tension by examining Taiwan’s sovereignty debate. Non-violent events harming the relationship with mainland China lead to an average daily drop of 200 basis points in Taiwanese stock returns. The impact is more severe on firms openly supporting the Taiwanese pro-independence party. Through a series of tests we identify this economic penalty as initiated by mainland authorities, who specifically target political opponents that are economically exposed to mainland China via either investments or exports. date: 2014-04 date_type: published publisher: TSE Working Paper official_url: http://tse-fr.eu/pub/28077 faculty: tse divisions: tse keywords: political tension keywords: political connections keywords: China keywords: Taiwan language: en has_fulltext: TRUE subjectsJEL: JEL_F51 subjectsJEL: JEL_G14 subjectsJEL: JEL_G15 view_date_year: 2014 full_text_status: public monograph_type: working_paper series: TSE Working Paper volume: 14-484 book_title: TSE Working Paper oai_identifier: oai:tse-fr.eu:28077 harvester_local_overwrite: oai_set harvester_local_overwrite: faculty harvester_local_overwrite: site harvester_local_overwrite: creators_idrefppn oai_lastmod: 2024-04-17T14:10:27Z oai_set: tse oai_set: ut1c site: ut1 citation: He, Yinghua , Nielsson, Ulf and Wang, Yonglei (2014) Hurting without Hitting: The Economic Cost of Political Tension.
