Abstract

The point of entry into an academic career is usually one's first job in a business school and/or university. From an analysis of the profiles of 326 PhD students in HRM pursuing an academic career in France, this paper highlights the factors impacting the choice of a job in a business school or in a university to launch an academic career. The older the newly-minted PhD candidate is, the more likely he or she will choose a business school. On the other hand, the higher the reputation of the PhD-granting institution or the higher the candidate's PhD supervisor status, the greater chance he or she has to start his or her academic career in a university. This paper is a first step in the understanding key factors influencing a PhD student's first job in French business schools or universities.
